I usually like Deanston but have been mainly preoccupied with their ex-bourbon expressions. I have tried and reviewed The 1997 Palo Cortado finish which was great, and I have been impressed with other PX finishes from The Maltman. Sounds like a great combo, huh?
1.6 (Mahogany / henna)
Nose
White pepper, a little sour and tangy note on a background of chocolate, raisins and citrus.
Palate
Winegums, lots of honey, some polished wood
Finish
Big, round, and sweet. Honey and sugar. Quite hot un-watered.
It's a quite different whisky from regular PX finishes, with the sherry influence being very subtle here. Would be hard to blindly put this as either a typical Deanston character or a PX finish, I think. I wanted a bit more sherry depth, but loved the finish. It's honey heavy, soft and pleasant.
