I have loved many of the 12 year old, ex-bourbon Single Barrel releases but wasn't impressed by a bottle of the 15 year old sherry cask I bought a while back. Single cask releases mean batch variations, so I swapped a few samples from another cask with a fellow Balvenie drinker and here we are!
1.5 (Auburn / polished mahogany)
Nose
Really nice, typical Oloroso nose. Reasonable depth - as in cooked fruits, marmalade, wine and a little leather. Some toffee in there, too. Something to sniff on, this one.
Nothing too surprising happens here as we gently transition from the palate. Spicy, dry, sweet, woody. Some bright red berries (zestier than the thick, deep nose) and citrus as well.
Nose is awesome, the rest is good. Definitely better than that other cask I tried (can't remember the number, sadly). Well done Oloroso, but maybe not in line with the climbing price.
