Bottled for the Swedish Whisky Federation (Svenska Whiskyförbundet) in the spring of 2010, making this 17-18 years old. Not many bottles of this one around nowadays and an unopened bottle goes for insane prices of course, it being an Hakushu and the market being ridiculous. This bottle has been opened for a few years though and I've tried it before a couple of times. I snagged a sample to review before it's gone forever. Thanks, dad!
1.2 (Chestnut Oloroso Sherry)
Nose
Fresh, clean, not very strong despite the hefty strength. Fruity with apricots up front.
Palate
Quickly coats the tongue. Transitions to a dry, intense spiciness after a few seconds. Tough and strong, but not overwhelming. Everything under control. Taste is still fruity, fresh and a bit zesty.
Finish
Fruity, spicy, warm. Long. Very long, actually. Sweet, woody with a tiny hint of leather when the whole thing eventually and regrettably ends.
Fantastic mouthfeel/intensity combination together with the long finish makes this an exciting whisky. It's a ride for sure, but without weird detours or surprising curves. Didn't bother to add water as I loved it just as it it. Lacks a bit of depth and diversity taste-wise but makes up for it with the composition. Would I pay market price for this? Of course not. I'd rather get a dozen reasonably priced bottles or so!
