Never had anything from Craigellachie before, no real expectations except probably some roughness from a whisky this young and strong!
1.4 (Tawny)
Nose
Hazelnuts, raisins, citrus. Spirity.
Palate
It's certainly strong, with that kind of alcoholic strength that fills the mouth and almost vaporizes rather than just burn. Lots of taste once the initial shock wears off. Oily and harsh mouthfeel.
Finish
Warm, dirty and metallic. Rough, fruity, a little sweet. Lingering dryness and pencils.
Wouldn't have guess this is a PX cask (or PX finish perhaps) as the sherry influence is rather subtle and balanced. Of course, eight years in the cask might not be enough to bring out all the usual sweetness. That aside, this is a dirty whisky for sure. It will fight you, and it's the opposite of smooth. While that can be fun (and great!) sometimes, this was just a bit too much for me.
